HIV/AIDS

The fight against HIV/AIDS is one of the most important themes in the framework of aid for development in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as other countries most affected by the pandemic. In the last 25 years, a substantial part of both bilateral as well as multilateral Italian funding has gone towards the strengthening of national health systems and basic health services in African countries most in need of these services. Italy is one of the major donors to the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, with a total funding of over 1 billion dollars (approximately 790 million Euros) between 2001 and 2008.

Following the visit of Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Stephen K. Musyoka, to Rome in July 2003 and his meeting with the Italian National Institute for Health, the Governments of Italy and Kenya initiated a collaborative technical-scientific programme with the following objectives: (a) to integrate the Kenya National Strategic HIV/AIDS Plan 2000 – 2005 and (b) strengthen public health facilities and services. It is in this regard that in the last few years this Development Cooperation Office has supported the activities of Italian NGOs operating in Kenya by addressing and coordinating their initiatives in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In the last seven years, the NGOs presented 12 project proposals for a total funding of 13.5 million Euros.
